Seasons: April to November months, April to May best time when morning to mid-day with clear fine weather for views and walks with mild temperatures, right times for treks for Upper Mustang. Upper Mustang can trek during monsoon wet months of July to mid-September as the area falls within rain-shadow area like Tibetan climate of dry with arid landscapes of less moisture. Monsoon rains less affected around Upper Mustang blocked by high Himalayan mountain range October to November months another best time for treks around autumn/fall days are clear for views as well right temperatures for walks, can be cold during night and morning times with chances of snow in high areas around high Mustang area above 2,000 meters high.

Upper Mustang Trekking leads to the former walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang an interesting large village or a town to experience on this lovely walk where you will be fascinated with local immense cultures of ancient heritage traditional life in the backdrop of giant mountains. Upper Mustang trekking leads you on an old Trans Himalayan Salt and Caravan route of Nepal to Tibet and vice-versa where trail extends beyond Upper Mustang towards Karo-La pass between the border of Nepal and Tibet / China, the caravan route still active since past hundreds of years. Our journey begins from scenic Pokhara a renowned touristic city blessed with nature of lakes and Annapurna Mountains, the adventure starts with a short flight to reach at Jomsom the main and headquarter town of Mustang district. From Jomsom where our walks lead to lovely villages of Kagbeni-Chele-Chusang and Charing to enter Lo-Mana thing to enjoy excellent moments around medial period village/town, then heading back to Jomsom after a great wonderful experience on Upper Mustang Trekking with excellent services of Yeti Mountain Treks.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

On arrival at Kathmandu international airport received by Yeti Mountain staff and guides for short transfer to your hotel in the center of Kathmandu city around interesting Thamel area or nearby. After checking your rooms and then getting refreshed briefing regarding Mustang treks with other useful information, with welcome dinner in nice Nepalese restaurants with cultural programs.

Day 02: Tour of Kathmandu heritage sites of great interest.

Morning by 9 a.m. where our city guide will take you for an interesting tour around great places steeped with world heritage sites and monuments, after a half day or full day tour back to hotel preparation for the treks.

Day 03: Fly or drive to Pokhara 860 m -06 hrs journey (30 mins by air).

Morning as per the group size either in comfortable tourist coach or in chartered cars where a drive leads to warmer low farm areas to reach Nepal Mid-West at Pokhara by the shore of beautiful Phewa Lake. Where all nice hotels located with views of lakes and Annapurna peaks overnight in the comfort of good hotels in Pokhara near to Phewa Lake. (Flying options of 30 minutes air journey to Pokhara from Kathmandu).

Day 04: Morning flight to Jomsom 2,715 m trek to Kagbeni 2,860 m- 04 hrs.

From Pokhara early morning short flight to reach lower Mustang area at Jomsom, headquarter town of Mustang district and the hub of Thakali people the natives of Kaligandaki River Valley of Buddhism religion. On landing at Jomsom airport with views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range during flight, our trek starts heading towards wide river valley of Kaligandaki to reach Kagbeni village for an overnight stop. An interesting village feels like you in Tibet due to similar culture and as well houses built in Tibetan heritage style, Kagbeni the gateway to Upper Mustang.

Day 05: Trek to Chele / Tsele 3,050 m - 06 hrs.

After a wonderful overnight at Kagbeni and exploring around this exciting village, morning walk starts heading with short uphill and into open areas within the towering colorful canyon and high eroded cliffs to reach at Tiri-Gaon village with well-cultivated farm fields. Walking within beautiful landscapes with short up and downs and on winding path to reach at Tshele village, pronounced as Chele, a village of moderate size here from onward into more Buddhism culture and custom similar to Tibet across the border.

Day 06: Trek to Geling 3,540 m - 05 hrs.

From this nice village of Chele or Tsele, walk starts with a short climb to reach Gyakar village, and then into windswept terrain within the dry and arid country, as walk slowly reaches at Samar village, one of the attractive looking villages. With time at Samar village walk continues to reach a small place of Bhena and then a steep climb leads to a ridge on top Yamda La at 3,860 m small pass, offering stunning views of Upper Mustang landscapes with high snow-capped peaks of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mustang Himal range. Enjoying great scenery descend to Syangboche village another interesting village, as walk finally ends at Gelling for an overnight stop in this lovely traditional village.

Day 07: Trek to Charing / Tsarang 3,560 m - 06 hrs.

After a pleasant and wonderful stop at Charing / Tsarang, morning with time to visit village old monastery here observe Buddhist prayer wheels propelled by fast flowing streams of water, after an interesting tour of the Gompa/monastery, the walk continues to Ghami village. As a walk, proceeds to cross over Ghaymi Khola (stream) and then leading to long rows of Mani walls (holy prayer stones), and then from here walk past Dhakmar village, and then finally reaching our overnight stop at Tsarang village, an impressive place surrounded by vast fields of buckwheat and barley. Here with time to visit its old monastery of great interest enriched with ancient religious relics and painting on walls and ceiling with a great statue of Buddha.

Day 08: Trek to Lo-Manthang 3,700 m - 04 hrs.

From Chiang our journey heading to our final goal and highlight of the adventure reaching at the former walled city of Lo-Manthang, actually a large village inside the fort known as Dzong that guards Lo-Manthang against outside invaders in early days. A few hours of the good walk takes you into Lo Manthang, a former kingdom where great Raja (king) of Mustang ruled the whole kingdom of Lo known as Mustang. As walk progress crossing a strong steel bridge to Marang village, from here climb to a ridge top, past chhorten and Mani stones prayer walls in between Tsarang and Lo Manthang. Walk with scenic views of Nilgiri’s, Tilicho and Bhrikuti peaks, and then up to Lo La pass above 3,950 m high offering grand scenery looking down towards Lo Manthang walled village and a fortress, from here descend to the base of a pass then on a nice path to reach at Lo Manthang for overnight stops.

Day 09: Explore the former walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang of great interest.

An interesting village to explore the town-village and its alley lined with stones paved street and visit its interesting old monasteries and the palace fort of late Kings / Raja of Mustang. Lo-Manthang famous for a festival called Tenji takes place in 27th till 29th days of the third month of Tibetan calendar (April and May every year). It is organized by Chhyode Gumba which is the monastery of Sakyapa sect located in Lomanthang, Upper MUSTANG. The monasteries abbot is Khenpo Tashi Tenjin Rinpoche and there is close to 35 other from Lomanthang, Nenyol, and Chhoser in the monastery. Villagers from all over “Lho Thu Dhyun” (the ancient kingdom of Lo) come to watch the dance and to participate in the accompanying festivities the villager of Lo also contribute firewood and necessary material to undertake the festival.

Day 10: Trek to Ghami 3,440 m - 06 hrs.

After a fascinating time at Lo-Manthang observing local impressive culture, walk towards lower areas to reach Jomsom with few short climbs to reach at Ghami for an overnight stop, one of the important village of Upper Mustang region.

Day 11: Trek to Samar 3,150 m -05 hrs.

Morning walks on the same trail with a climb up to Nyi La pass and then contour upwards to reach the path coming from Tsarang village, from ridge top descend to Gelling Valley. The walk continues past Gelling to reach an isolated Tea House and then with slow downhill reaching Tama Gung. With steep switchbacks as route climb on the path across a large painted chhorten and then on straightforward route to our overnight stop at Samar village.

Day 12: Trek to Kagbeni -05 hrs and transfer to lodge.

Enjoying time at Upper Mustang country and its interesting villages with super views, slowly our journey leads back to Kagbeni on downhill trail as walk leads on the same route past Chele village to reach at Mustang Khola, from here on gradual path between towering canyons and eroded high cliffs to reach at Kagbeni after a great time at Upper Mustang.

Day 13: Trek to Jomsom 2, 715 m - 04 hours.

From Kagbeni with an easier walk on gradual and downhill to reach Kaligandaki river valley, from the valley floor with few hours walk reaches you at Jomsom, located on a shelf of Kaligandaki River. Jomsom and Kaligandaki areas, famous for delicious apple and fine products cider, brandy and juice an interesting town of Thakali people to explore around.

Day 14: Morning flight to Pokhara 860 m transfer to hotel.

From here, last day of our adventure taking an early morning short flight to reach famous and scenic Pokhara city by its calm Phewa Lake for an overnight stop, with a free afternoon to explore around interesting Pokhara city.

Day 15: Drive or fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Morning transfer for the journey back to Kathmandu where a drive leads on the scenic and interesting road past farm villages and towns and then uphill to reach Kathmandu valley and the city. After an exciting drive of 5-6 hours reaching Kathmandu and transfer to hotel with afternoon free for individual activities. (Flying options of 30 minutes air journey to Kathmandu from Pokhara)

Day 16: International departure for homeward bound.

Last day in Nepal the country of Himalayan wonders and impressive cultures, as your international flight time transfer to the international airport in Kathmandu for home-ward bound or to respective destinations, after a memorable experience and adventure on Upper Mustang Trekking with great services of Yeti Mountain Treks.
